The movie premiered on March 29 and has been breaking down barriers and exceeding expectations ever since. It landed at #4 at the Box Office on opening weekend, despite an R-rating for "some disturbing/bloody images," a virtual media blackout except on a few Christian media outlets, a temporary ban on Twitter opening night and a mischaracterization by Google at first as "propaganda." The groundswell of support has been grassroots and word of mouth with more than $6.4 million in sales on opening weekend and an expansion from 1,000 theaters to 1,700 the next weekend.
Unplanned is the true story of Abby Johnson. As one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, Johnson was involved in upwards of 22,000 abortions and counseled countless women on their reproductive choices. Her passion surrounding a woman's right to choose led her to become a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in. Until the day she saw something that changed everything.
